Why are so many people in Chicago so crabby?

Whenever our family visits Chicago, its like the city of crabby people. I can't think of one place we went that the employees were friendly. Even Chuckecheese workers were rude, the Chuckecheese near where we live all the employees are super nice and friendly. The grocery store employees didn't greet, didn't smile. The gas stations we stopped at employee's were unfriendly the toll collectors were angry faced and unfriendly. Why don't people in Chicago say hi to strangers or wave to neighbors when driving past them, people look at you weird if you say hello ? Why are they like that, is it just a bitter generation? Why are so many people in Chicago so crabby?
I can't imagine why workers at Chuckecheeses would be in bad moods, lol! No, seriously it's not just Chicago, it's any big city. When that many people are put together in such a small area, people get desensitized in a lot of ways. If everyone waved at each other in Chicago, for instance, people would be literally waving all day and wouldn't be able to do anything else! Why are so many people in Chicago so crabby?
No sure why you find Chicago so crabby as I've been there many times and think the people are quite nice. There's crabby and nice people all over the place; you must be hitting them at the wrong time!

For what it's worth, here's an article I just wrote about the top 5 rudest cities in America from a Travel magazine's perspective:

I'm guessing you went in the winter time? The thing is about Chicago in the winters, especially the south side of Chicago gets some pretty nasty winters because of lake Michigan and the harsh winds here make the winter seem 100X worse. Usually in the winter time people become really grumpy cause of the cold and winds and it just make people crabby. If you experienced that in the spring time or summer than i wouldn't know why.Why are so many people in Chicago so crabby?
I grew up in Chicago.

I moved from there to a small town in western MI to get away from the city and the people who inhabit them.

For the first week here i think i gave three people the finger while driving out of instinct when they were just waving because that's what we do here we wave to each other.

Trust me the "city" leaves you real quick when you move to where real people live.
I went to Chicago a couple years ago, when I visited America. It was nothing like the movies had made it. Heck, it was awful!

It was grotty, bland and dull. I much prefered New York(Definitely worth visiting again), Albuquerque, San Antonio (LOVED Texas).

Illinois and Arizona were the worst states I have ever been to.Why are so many people in Chicago so crabby?
Well you would be crabby too if your taxes were 66 percent with nothing to show for it. Oh and you produced a racist sociopath community organizer with the worst case narcissistic personality disorder ever seen, that now occupies the White House with his anti american racist wife
Oh, because it's windy, cold, and full of corruption.

Maybe if Obama could be sent back there in 2012,

he'd straighten them all up, eh?
I have never found that to be the case in Chicago, Boston or New York maybe. Crabby people can be found everywhere including small towns if they don't know you .
It's all a matter of perspective

When you grow up in NYC you find the people who live in small cities like Chicago to be downright friendly
The weather plays a big role. Also there are huge egos in Chicago, may people acting and dressing way past their pay check.
Try to find some friends closer to home. Tollbooths and birthday party restaurants designed for toddlers are really not the best places to look.
I travel to Chicago often and I find the people there to always be friendly.

Maybe it's you.
It's a liberal utopia. Happiness is not allowed.
Perhaps they just recognize a scumbag when they see one.
They had to put up with Obama for much more than 2 years.
So many socialists there. They are not happy people.
