The biggest problem with respect to energy is that people are used to it being cheap. The same people who demand that we're too dependent on oil and coal bemoan high gas and electricity prices as too onerous for them to pay.
There are lots of alternatives to fossil fuels, but they cost more to make and use. Our society needs to realize that energy costs something and use it accordingly.
