This is the idea that urban sprawl should be stopped, and all growth and residences of citizens should be "encouraged" to be more centralized. Key to this would be the development of mass public transit and to discourage people from owning cars. It does kinda suck being partial owner of a plane, but that is only because I can't afford to buy one by myself.
Perhaps but it's too late to change that now. However, you could argue that public transportation causes problems, such as inefficiency, environmental problems (expanding service, laying down new tracks, etc.), damaging property values (they fall when stations and tracks go up nearby), crime (every stood alone on a platform late at night when some thugs are hanging around?), etc.Does mass Automobile ownership in America cause problems?

Mass automobile ownership has never caused those problems in city and town planning--those governments do that all on their own. Social problems? I don't see how. Economic problems? Only if you give half the population the other half of the populations hard earned money to go buy a car and trash a perfectly good one. Environmental? No. There are so many regulations on these automakers, it's more than covered. And the aim was never to control pollution--it was to contol industry.
