What is the difference between lead and diamond?

Since lead has components of carbon and also diamond, why do we say that diamond is the hardest?

the 1 who answers it is a genius. What is the difference between lead and diamond? Its all about the bonding of the carbons. Diamond has network covalent bonding, which is the strongest type. What is the difference between lead and diamond?
Diamond has been compressed under the earth's crust for millions of years, compacting it to it's current state. Lead, on the other hand, has not. What is the difference between lead and diamond?lead has some components of carbon and also diamond.lead is an element which belongs to the same period in the periodic table.but diamond is an isotope of carbon, but lead is not a isotope.in diamond the carbon chains in it are very strong and it has covalent bonds.in lead the carbon chain are somewhat weak. What is the difference between lead and diamond?
Both previous answers are only partially right. The answer is in the 3-dimensional structure of the carbon-carbon covalent bonds. 'Lead' / graphite is carbon bonded together in sheets. like having a stack of bedsheets, one on the other. Diamond is carbon in a complete 3-D matrix with one Carbon attached to 4 carbons in a symmetric shape (All of those carbons are attached to 4 more carbons etc. It's a strong bond that takes immense heat and pressure to make. What is the difference between lead and diamond?Lead and carbon are separate elements on the periodic table. Lead has an element number of 82 while Carbon is 12. Lead is a metal and Diamond is made up of compressed carbon which is a gas in room temperature.

I think what you mean is graphite, the thing pencils use. It is sometimes called "lead" because when it was first discovered people thought it was a form of lead. Anyway, the difference is how the carbon is arranged. See the attachment.
