Scattered throughout the bairros (neighborhoods) in Rio are slums (favelas) inhabited by the impoverished and unemployed. The crime in these favelas is extremely high, and it leaks out into the surrounding areas. Take a look at Rio on Google Earth. You will see the poorest neighborhoods wedged in between the rich neighborhoods and mountainsides. They are the areas that looked cramped and random, often with dirt roads.
